First Impressions of Literary New York This essay, first published in Harper's Monthly Magazine in June 1895, is Howells' first-person account of his first visit to New York in August 1860. Howells describes his encounters with the Bohemians both at the Saturday Press and Pfaff's. Howells describes in detail his first meeting with Walt Whitman, at Pfaff's, as well as his other encounters with the poet.
