Bad Symptoms [from the Atlantic Monthly for June] Spencer contemplates people’s deliberate blindness to those they consider to be of a lower class.  He also comments on the unending competition between upper-class women in terms of setting the style of the times.   He concludes that people “lack social courage” that would allow them to stray from the pack and act as individuals.
