Thoughts and Things In this column, Clare discusses "the little and unnecessary jealousies of artists" (2).  Clare claims it is absurd for artists to discredit each other in attempts to increase their own fame.  She argues that artists need to be enthusiastic and reverent about their art in order to improve their craft.  Clare argues instead for an artistic community that understands, supports and protects each other, rather than attacks and strains itself.  She also claims that this is not an answer to someone's attacks on her writing, as she doesn't engage in these exchanges.
