Harper's Magazine This article contains a review of William Dean Howells's "First Impressions of Literary New York," commenting in particular on Howells's description of the Pfaff's bohemians: "The scenes at Pfaff's and elsewhere and the kindly estimates of Walt Whitman and other writers are very reminiscent and characteristic, and the portraits of Whitman, Artemus Ward and others of equal interest. Whitman's is very much conventionalized" (10).
