A former teacher, Charles Bailey Seymour moved from London to New York City in 1849.
The preface to Self-Made Men reads, "In this volume will be found the lives of more than sixty distinguished persons who have attained eminence in spite of adverse circumstances of birth and fortune." The men featured in the collection include Andrew Jackson, Daniel Webster, Hans Christian Anderson, Emmanuel Kant, Henry Clay, Daniel Boone, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Franklin, and James Watt, among others.
