This collection of short stories includes the tales "A Sea Turn" (a domestic narrative about a young couple in Boston), "His Grace the Duke" (about Henry Grey, the Duke of Suffolk), "Shaw's Folly" (a New York City story similar to William Dean Howells's The Rise of Silas Lapham about a sucessful city businessman who returns to the simple life of rural New England), "An Untold Story" (a story set in Budapest about a traveler who witnesses a suicide), "The Case of Thomas Phipps" (a rural tale about a young boy who wants to leave the farm to become a house-painter), and "The White Feather" (a Civil War tale told in the voice of a Massachusetts veteran).
