Born in Ireland, John Brougham originally pursued a surgical career at the Peter Street Hospital in Dublin.
This play was first produced in London. The first American production was at Niblo's Garden on June 1, 1863. The play was popular enough that it was parodied in such subsequent productions as The Duke's Device, The Duke's Signal, and The Duke's What Is It?.
