The birth of Jesus Christ as the "Prince of Peace" is juxtoposed against two perceptions of war. First war is described as "youthful king, a stately hero" admired by monarchs, youths and maidens. Mary's voice counters that although she is "a woman poor and mean" she rejoices in the birth of the "Prince of Peace" as "war is a ruffian...a murderous fiend, by fiends adored." She concludes "wisely is my soul elate" upon the birth of the "Prince of Peace."
