Abstract

Hunt discusses the meaning of the word club in relation to a gathering of a group of people for a common purpose. He traces the routes of this definition of the word to the literature of Greece and Rome and studies it throughout the ages using Samuel Johnson, Shakespeare, and Chaucer for examples.
