Abstract

This article discusses a claim made by a Mr. Jas Savage in a speech given to the Massachusetts Historical Society. Mr. Savage stated that there were no marriages officiated by a member of the clergy of the Church of England before 1686 in New England. One of the reasons for this is the Puritanical belief that marriage was a civil contract.
