The short poem runs through several of Shakespeare's female characters and the narrator's harsh judgment of each, ranging from Desdemona's decision to marry the "negro" Othello to Lady MacBeth's evil influence on her husband. The narrator has a low opinion of theater in general, as seen in the line "Such conduct even on the stage / I think I never knew."
