Doomed to Disappointment [from Chambers' Edinburgh Journal]

A man bemoans the deplorable conditions of his existence, thinking he is doomed for a miserable life. When he finally meets a woman he likes, it turns out she has problems breathing, and when he goes to kiss her, she has a respirator over her mouth.
