Nathaniel Graham Shepherd (also Shepard) was born in New York City and grew up to study poetry there.
The narrator marries an intelligent but fragile woman. After he publishes a book and gains popularity, he sees less of his wife. Eventually he grows indifferent to his wife's failing health, and spends time with other women. He is almost happy when he discovers his wife is dead.
