The speaker's lover, "poor Louise," has lived a life of pain and is now passed away "At sunset of an August day." Characterized as beautiful, graceful, gentle, "Pensive and mild," she carried a "secret grief...beyond relief." Her suffering is in her smile, a "ghastly, wild...beauteous curve of pain."
