This article provides a brief academic, professional, and personal biography of Thomas Carlyle. One of Carlyle's letters to Goethe that describes his domestic circumstances and the town in which he lives is reprinted. The item concludes by mentioning that Carlyle has just completed the first two volumes of a "Life of Frederick the Great in Prussia" and that the London Illustrated News hopes to see two more volumes before long.
