Developing the skill of mesmerism, Martin Speed uses it in his effort to find a wife. Meeting a young widow who has heard of his new science, he attempts to influence her. When she falls asleep and he awakens her again, he believes he has been successful in finding the right woman, and he marries her. He later discovers she may have tricked him, as his skill no longer works, but soon realizes he is content with his new life.
