After years of separation, the narrator sees his childhood friend who deserted her small New England community and her loving, old “Grandshire” to marry a man with “city airs and handsome eyes.” The narrator finds her with her husband, both dressed lavishly, in the audience of a Tragedy they are attending separately and is saddened by the real-life tragedy that took place with her disappearance and betrayal.
