Abstract

Clare writes to Mitchell "in a state of great astonishment" for how he has left her "destitute of money in a strange land, and without friends." She details her sufferings and the social ramifications caused by her undesirable situation and chastises him for his lack of understanding. Should he not return her letter, she plans to return to America to see "what the matter can be."
